What is a Doula?

A Doula provides non-medical emotional and physical support before, during and after labor such as breathwork, sound therapy, massage, guided visualization and meditation. Whether your family has chosen to birth at home, a birthing center or the hospital, a Doula is there to create an environment that allows the pregnant woman to feel comfortable and relaxed in her body. As nursing staff come and go, doctors and midwives appear towards the end of labor to catch the baby, it is the Doula who is a familiar, trusted person that can help you birth your baby.

What exactly does a Doula do?

A Doula educates clients by providing pertinent information and tools to make empowered choices for their birth. A Doula also uses physical support during the labor process, such as back pressure and massage.

Why work with a Doula?

A Doula supports the entire family. Being supported by an educated Doula can enhance your entire birth experience; this could be by simply having someone knowledgeable of hospital protocol, or someone who can help communicate the family’s wishes with the nursing staff and make sure they are fulfilled.
